Why Print Matters

 

Let me explain: It used to be that photographers would hand over “proofs” (prints) to their clients. These proofs served as a tangible item to show clients what pictures were taken. When I first started photographing weddings I would print out a contact sheet, and chose the images I wanted to hand over. Most clients got about 200 or less images from they’re wedding day, and some got albums, which I put together myself. A year after their anniversary, and after I had saved the images I wanted to keep for my portfolio, I would mail the clients the negatives to keep. Think of the digital images as negatives, the original. The process of being able to upload the images and share them online with you in a gallery is amazing, it’s efficient and cost affective. However, it is not a substitute for the actual pictures. It is a tool to view your proofs. Got it? Am I loosing you? Read on. 

When I first started out, this was never an issue, because everyone got 4” x 6″ prints from me with every wedding, or session. It was costly using film, and it took a lot longer, but it was truly a thoughtful and artistic process. One that I miss.  Now  digital images are tucked away on a jump drive in your desk, or lost in your computer somewhere, never to be seen again. Lets be honest how often do you just sit at your computer and enjoy looking at pictures for the joy of it? I think generally speaking we have become consumers, who want things quickly, and our attention span is that of a two year old. I know I am guilty of that.

I have decided to do a 180. I am now offering prints with every single shoot or wedding. If you want more, you can order them from your online gallery, at a nominal cost (less than a Starbucks latte:). Online cloud storage is good for up to eight months (6 for family sessions) so it gives you enough time to look at the gallery, and decide what you want to print out, and order addtional prints, frames etc… The beauty in this is that you can share the gallery with your family, and they can order prints directly. If you’d like to simply show your friends you can also share your gallery on Facebook.

I have been trying to reconfigure my delivables (i.e what you get with the shoot) in a way that benefits my clients, and myself without compromising on quality without having to up my pricing in 2017. In order to do this, I have thought long and hard about what has worked in the past and what hasn’t. I will be delevering actual printed photographs, that are shipped directly to you a few weeks after the session (or wedding).  I know that people lead incredibly busy lives and with kids, work, organizing your home, there is not enough time in the day for you to sit around and design a family album, frame that print you always wanted of your wedding day, or your daughters first year. I am offering this service becasue I think it is important, and in my experince, it is not that you don’t want to do it, you just don’t have the time!

Why are prints important?

Over the last several years it has been popular for photographers to just hand over a CD (now obsolete) or USB drive with all the images. I fell into this because it was everyone else was doing, and I felt pressured to do the same in order to keep up with other photographers. However, it was never somthing I felt comfortable with. In my mind it was like handing over a client a set of hundreds of negatives, and making them sort through them, and them take them to a print shop! It’s NOT a finished product. Don’t get me wrong. Digital files are wonderful. They allow us to share our memories with friends in far-off places. But where digital images offer us the ability to share far and wide, physical products give us a long-term piece to be shared, felt and enjoyed for years and generations to come. This is why every single family session or wedding package includes prints, and/or a framed image in our signature frames or album, as well as ten digital images for you to use as you please. You can also order any of these services a la carte if you wish, at any time (book now, decide you want an album in six months, ok)! It is super important to me that you actually have a tangible picture! USB drives can be purchased if you’d like. But I will send over a USB drive on your one-year anniversary. I know that some of you want to share your favorites on social media, which is why I also will be sharing  some digital images for you to share on social media, or for those of you who are DIY and want to make your own calendar, or thank you cards, great! I encourage this!
